How to Choose the Right Chain Length – My Guide to Finding the Perfect Fit
When someone asks me what the most important part of choosing a necklace is, I always say: get the chain length right. It’s something that’s often overlooked, but the way a chain sits on your neck can completely change how a piece looks and feels. Whether you’re layering necklaces or picking something to wear every day, I’m here to help you find the perfect fit.
As a jewellery designer and maker, I’ve worked with hundreds of customers over the years — and I know that the “right” length can be different for everyone. So here’s my guide to the most common chain lengths, with tips to help you choose the one that suits you best.
📏 Understanding Chain Lengths
15-Inch Chain – Choker Style
This one sits closely around the neck and is great for a more elegant or fashion-forward look. It works best with open-neck tops or if you love that minimalist choker vibe.
16-Inch Chain – Just on the Collarbone
This is one of the most popular lengths I work with. It sits just above the collarbone and is perfect for everyday wear — subtle, timeless, and flattering on almost everyone.
18-Inch Chain – A Classic Choice
If you’re unsure, this is a great go-to. It falls just below the collarbone, which makes it ideal for showing off pendants. I find it suits most face shapes and is easy to layer with other pieces.
20-Inch Chain – A Bit More Drama
This length drops slightly lower, usually to the top of the bust. It’s a good choice if you like a bit more movement or wear higher-necked tops.
22–24 Inch Chains – Mid-Bust Area
A little longer, these create a more relaxed look. I love using them for statement pieces or when I want to layer two or three chains of different lengths.
30 Inches and Over – Statement Style
Longer chains are often called opera length. You can wear them long and dramatic or double them over for a layered look. They're perfect for styling over knitwear or dresses.
👗 A Few Styling Tips From Me
-
Layer it up: I often wear a 16-inch with an 18 or 22-inch piece — it creates depth without looking cluttered.
-
Think about your neckline: A choker works well with off-the-shoulder or V-neck tops, while longer chains are great with high necklines.
-
Body and face shape matters: Petite frames usually suit shorter chains, while longer ones can elongate rounder faces.
