The Art of Hammered Gold: My Jewellery-Making Technique
How I Create Hammered Textures in Gold
One of my favourite techniques when making jewellery is hammering. It’s such a simple, age-old method — just me, a hammer, and a block — yet it creates endlessly unique textures.
When I hammer gold, I’m not trying to make it perfect. I’m letting it speak. Each tap leaves a tiny mark that catches the light in a different way. These marks build a rich, organic surface — no two pieces ever come out the same.
This texture reminds me of natural surfaces: tree bark, pebbles, ripples on water. It gives each piece a lived-in feel, a softness and strength all at once.
Hammering isn’t just about looks. It also strengthens the metal slightly — a process called work-hardening. So the texture adds beauty and durability.
It’s one of those simple techniques that lets the material shine. No machines, no mass production — just traditional tools and care. That’s the heart of my work.
